Itasca Gun Club will open the outdoor range as of 08:00 Monday April 20th

On April 17th, Governor Walz issued Executive Order 20-38, allowing outdoor venues including shooting ranges to open, provided they follow this Executive Order and the Guidelines for Outdoor Recreational Facilities

Here’s a bunch of notes about work that needs to be completed, and what you need to know and do if you plan to use the range. Keep in mind that everything that needs to be done to re-open the range has to be done by volunteers. If you want to help, you can respond by clicking "Contact Webmaster" below.

The situation:

  • Volunteers evaluated the entry road for stability after the normal winter depredations. Volunteers are working to run a drag over the road, which needs surface maintenance.
  • The range in general is still wet and soft. Plan on walking, not driving to targets.
  • The rifle range is also too soft to support vehicles, so DO NOT drive to put up and remove targets. Walk. There’s no value in wasting money to repair damage that can be avoided.

Your responsibilities:

  • Observe all firearms safety rules!
  • No more than 8 people may use the rifle range at one time.
  • No more than 8 people may use the pistol range at one time.
  • Don’t park in soft areas. Walk a little bit.
  • Maintain social distancing. Keep at least six feet of separation between participants from different households. Consider a mask. Don’t stand directly downwind of others.
  • Use common sense and think safety first. Don’t bunch up.
  • Be polite, considerate, and patient if there are a lot of people. Don’t hog shooting points.
  • Bring your own sanitizer for your hands and surfaces that you touch.
  • As soon as you can after shooting, wash your hands with soap and cold water to remove traces of lead.
  • Bring your own targets and staplers to put them up.
  • Read and follow the MN Guidelines for Outdoor Recreational Facilities
  • Read the Itasca Gun Club Safety Plan and Range Operating Procedures
  • Always point your muzzle in a safe direction
  • Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire
  • Always keep your firearm unloaded until you’re ready to use it

Stay safe and we’ll get through this. At least we can now go out and punch holes in targets or try for the 300-yard gong!
